In May of 1993, a crew of four Florida International University students began production on a student video project to be called Control Freaks. The idea for the project originated from director Anthony Sanlino and writer Luis Fuentes. The idea began as a drama about two college students interested in film-making while fighting over the female lead of their film. The love triangle poisons their friendship and their film. After casting the project with non-actors, it was decided that the tone of the film would be altered from dramatic to comedic with excellent and unexpected results.
Actors were encouraged to find their own voice from what was written on the scripted page. Ad-libbing dialogue occurred
